Briefly Noted

New for 2/02/2007

Knowledge River / SIRLS alums Daniel Berdaner, Roberto Zapata, and Jolie Graybill have been busy with the American Library Association’s Emerging Leaders program. In November, the three were selected to participate in the highly competitive program. Sponsored applicants were selected by their sponsoring organization and guaranteed a spot in the program. A selection committee representing all types of libraries read the remaining applications and chose another fifty participants. At the January 19th Emerging Leaders kick-off event, Daniel, Roberto, and Jolie were selected for their respective committees. Daniel and the other Project A members will be working with the Reference and User Services Association task force to identify and evaluate strategies for recruiting new members. Roberto is on the Project H committee responsible for analyzing and reorganizing the Association for Library Service to Children’s website. As part of the Project Q committee, Jolie will be investigating the feasibility of creating a national library camp.

For the next six months the Emerging Leaders' projects will grow and develop online and then culminate at the ALA’s 2007 annual meeting in Washington, DC. SIRLS wishes its alums, Daniel, Roberto, and Jolie the best of luck and success in their endeavors and hope to have an update in a few months.

New for 11/13/2006

Knowledge River / SIRLS alums Daniel Berdaner, Roberto Zapata, Jolie Graybill have been selected  for participation in the highly competitive American Library Association’s Emerging Leaders program initiated by ALA president Leslie Berger. The program welcomes and trains 100 new librarians to get a jump-start in leadership. Applicants commit to participating in required program elements, and must plan to serve to serve on an ALA, Division, Chapter, or Round Table committee, taskforce or workgroup upon completion of program. Participants will receive two days of training with Maureen Sullivan, organization consultant, and Connie Paul, executive director of the Central Jersey Regional Library Cooperative; participation in a problem-solving workgroup; networking with 100 peers; an inside look into ALA structure and an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. Felicidades to Daniel, Roberto and Jolie!

Congrats to SIRLS students Matthew Smith, Jason Kuscma, and Megan Plesea, who have been awarded registration scholarships to the upcoming Persistence of Vision Conference on Digital Preservation to be held in Tucson on December 5-6. We hope to hear more from them later when they write up their experiences on attending the conference.

LSO and SLA are sponsoring an end-of-the-semester party on Saturday, December 2nd in the home of Larry and Jana Bradley.  All SIRLS students, staff, faculty, and friends are invited to this celebration - please save the date!  RSVP to blakisto@email.arizona.edu, or see the SIRLS Calendar for more information.

Kudos to SIRLS Assistant Professor Dr. Anita Coleman and all the other dLIST folks for helping the Arizona chapter of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) win the first ASIS&T Chapter Assembly Chapter Innovation Award. dLIST was cited as a resource essential for building the LIS community in the area and for revitalizing the local chapter. Congratulations and thanks go to SIRLS Associate Professor Dr. Cheryl Malone for leading the effort to apply for – and win – the very first College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Magellan Circle Fellowship Award.  Funding will be used to support an on campus visit and lecture by Dr. Fernando Elichirigoity of the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Professor Elichirigoity will appear for a SIRLS Research Brown Bag lecture on Thursday, November 30 at noon in the SIRLS Multipurpose Room. Details of the lecture will be announced at a later date.

As most of you know, SIRLS alum Dr. Loriene Roy is the current President-Elect of the American Library Association. SIRLS students have been invited to form a new Virtual Student Action Circle as part of Dr. Roy’s ALA Presidential Initiatives. Students who accept the invitation will choose platforms or projects they would like to contribute to during Dr. Roy's term as President-Elect and President. If you are interested in participating by doing research, connecting with other people, brainstorming, or contributing in other ways to Dr. Roy's ALA plans, please email Sara Albert at sara.albert@gmail.com.

SIRLS Associate Professor Don Fallis is featured in the recently published book Information Technology and Social Justice edited by Emma Rooksby and John Weckert, published by Information Science Publishing (October, 2006). Professor Fallis drafted Chapter Two entitled, “Epistemic Value Theory and the Digital Divide.” The book will be available Oct. 31 from your favorite bookstore or online book dealer.

New for 10/22/2006

Four current and one future SIRLS students have been named Urban Library Scholars by the Urban Libraries Council. Liz Danforth, Mary Dodson, Sami James, Dale Savage, and incoming student Fabiana Ceballos Gutierrez are part of a national cohort that will receive financial assistance with tuition and broad exposure to diverse views on public libraries and community dynamics through work experience, a listserv and attendence at Big Picture Sessions on library trends and issues. The students are employed by Tucson-Pima Public Library, one of 24 libraries nation-wide participating in the ULC program, which is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. SIRLS is pleased to announce that we are one of twelve schools selected for participation in the American Library Association Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship Program. Modeled after the Americal Library Association Master's Spectrum Scholarship Program, the goal of the fellowship is to provide support for traditionally underserved populations. Funding comes from the Instutite for Museum and Library Services. Applicants should be of American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander heritage and be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. The program will provide full tuition support and annual stipends totaling $20,000 to 10 new full-time library and information science (LIS) doctoral students beginning in the fall of 2007 for all four years of study. SIRLS Assistant Professor Anita Coleman will present two papers, Commons Based Digital Libraries and Digital Repositories and the Commons, at the upcoming ASIS&T conference November 3-9 in Austin, TX.

Congratulations to SIRLS student Joseph Valdez, one of only 25 Diversity Scholars selected for participation in the 2006-2008 Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce. The Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce offers graduate library science education stipends of up to $10,000 to attract students from underrepresented groups to careers in research libraries. Karen Holloway Bell has recently been appointed SIRLS Coordinator for Individual Studies. The Individual Studies program includes internships, practica and independent studies. Most recently Karen was Team Leader for Financial and Human Resources at the University of Arizona Libraries. She has held positions in academic, government, association, and business libraries in her 30 years as an information professional. She holds Master of Arts degrees in Library Science from the University of Michigan and in Political Science from the University of Georgia. SIRLS Director Jana Bradley and Associate Professor Don Fallis will attend the 2006 i-Conference October 15-17 in Ann Arbor Michigan. The theme this year focuses on frontiers of research in the information world.

Professor Fallis is also presenting a paper, “ What is Lying? Why Chisholm and Feehan Were Almost Right,” for the Wayne State University department of philosophy on October 13 at 4:00 PM.

SIRLS Director Jana Bradley and Knowledge River Director Pat Tarin will attend the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color October 11-15, 2006 in Dallas. SIRLS has reserved exhibit space to showcase the SIRLS program and Knowledge River, as well as recruit for SIRLS scholarship programs.

SIRLS Director Jana Bradley will present at the Fourth International Conference on the Book October 20-22, 2006. Dr. Bradley’s paper is entitled, “Exploring the Effects of the Digital Environment on Society’s Archive: A Life-Cycle Approach.”

The Library of Congress, The Center for the Book has recently published “Libraries in Culture: Historical Essays Honoring the Legacy of Donald G. Davis Jr.,” edited by SIRLS Associate Professor Cheryl Knott Malone along with co-editors Hermina G.G. Anghelescu and John Mark Tucker. The readings were originally published as a special issue of the journal _Libraries & Culture_, v. 40, no.3, summer 2005.  The work includes 15 articles from well-known scholars of library and book history and a foreword by former IMLS chief Robert Sidney Martin.

SIRLS Assistant Professor Bill Edgar will moderate “The Reality of the Global, Digital Workplace: Innovation in Knowledge Management” with Matt Chapman, James Dobbins, Mary Moulton and Anne Rogers at the ASIS&T 2006 Annual in Austin, Texas, November 3-9. Bill is also presenting a paper on his research “Questioning LibQUAL+: Critiquing its Assessment of Academic Library Effectiveness.”

New for 9/25/2006

SIRLS Assistant Professor Dr. Anita Coleman published two articles this summer. William Stetson Merrill and Bricolage for Information Studies was published in the Journal of Documentation 62 (4): 462-481. The article provides historical insight into the early classification work of William Stetson Merrill. Coleman also published Dervos, D. and Coleman, A. A Common Sense Approach to Defining Data, Information and Metadata. Proceedings of the Ninth International ISKO 2006 Conference, Vienna. Editor: Swertz, C. Publisher: Berlin: Ergon. A third article by Coleman, Assessing the Value of a Journal Beyond the Impact Factor, has been accepted by the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology and awaits publication.

SIRLS' own dLIST, an open archives repository for scholarly communication in library and information science, continues to receive accolades and has recently been featured in two articles. dLIST: Open Access Archives by Rachel Singer Gordon is available through EmeraldInsight and features quotes by Anita Coleman. A second article, About dLIST by S. Arun, ran in the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (UK) Newsletter.

SIRLS students Rebecca Blakiston, Constance Weatherford, & Michael Schor published their article Living the Future 6: Wow—Where next? Student reflections on a professional conference in the September 2006 issue of College & Research Libraries News. It’s available online.

SIRLS welcomes Jeniene Schaffer to the staff in a part-time capacity as SIRLS Alumni Outreach Coordinator. Jeniene is filling a temporary position made possible through special one-time funds to help SIRLS get a start on development activities, particularly raising money for Knowledge River scholarships once the current grants end. Prior to accepting the position at SIRLS, Jeniene raised funds for the Friends of Saguaro National Park.

New for 9/05/2006

SIRLS student and Clamor magazine co-founder Jason Kucsma discusses his decision to seek a library degree and other topics in a featured interview in the current issue of Tucson Weekly, the local entertainment and alternative newsweekly. The Weekly boasts a circulation of nearly 50,000, almost double that of The Citizen, Tucson's mainstream afternoon daily.

The Library Student Organization has announced they will be experimenting with a public WIKI this year in addition to their web site and current blog. SIRLS student Olivia Sparks will kick off as moderator.

New through 8/28/2006

Wilding appointed Visiting Associate Professor of Practice. SIRLS is delighted to announce the appointment of Tom Wilding as a visiting Associate Professor of Practice and SIRLS Academic Advising Coordinator for the academic year 2006-2007. Tom brings to SIRLS a wealth of experience in librarianship, teaching and advising drawn from a professional career spanning 48 years of practical and academic appointments.

Tom is serving as a temporary replacement for associate professor William Welburn, who resigned  this summer to accept the position of Associate Dean of the Graduate College at the University of Illinois.

Fulton, Fragoso join SIRLS staff. Recent SIRLS graduate Bruce Fulton (‘06)has accepted the newly created position of Communications and Outreach Librarian, funded in part by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records. Bruce will focus on SIRLS’ external outreach to prospective and current students, alums, and SIRLS supporters. Bruce’s background includes non-profit management, instructional technology and grant writing.

Geraldine Fragoso is SIRLS new office specialist. Geraldine is responsible for office and meeting organization and answering questions from students and other interested people. She works closely with students and staff.

SIRLS alum Roy is new president-elect of the ALA. SIRLS alum Loriene Roy (MLS, ’80) has been elected president of the American Library Association and will be inaugurated as the 2007-2008 President of ALA at the 2007 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. With 66,000 members, the ALA is both the largest and oldest library association in the world. Loriene currently teachers Library and Information Science at the University of Texas at Austin, and has previously taught classes for SIRLS.

Bradley paper published. SIRLS director and professor Dr. Jana Bradley’s paper “Librarians in the 21st Century” has been published in volume 3 number 2 of Common Ground’s refereed The International Journal of the Book. The paper explores the way librarians are adapting the principles and practices of the profession to the emerging information environment of the 21st Century through an examination of the activities of librarians nominated by their peers for the 21st-Century Librarian award. Fallis, Mathiesen present at E-CAP. SIRLS professor Don Fallis and senior lecturer Kay Mathiesen presented papers at the 2006 European Conference on Computing and Philosophy in Trondheim, Norway this past June. Fallis paper was titled “Applied Epistemology and Philosophy of Information. Mathiesen discussed “The Value of Information: Information Ethics for Information Professionals.”

Malone presents at SHARP 2006. SIRLS Associate Professor Cheryl Knott Malone presented her paper “First-Person Accounts of Libraries: An Analysis of Electronic Full-Text Women's Diaries” at the 2006 Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing conference held in The Hague, Netherlands this past July.

SIRLS Students win prestigious national scholarships. Two SIRLS students have been awarded American Library Association Spectrum Scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year. The Spectrum program awards scholarships to American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students attending an ALA-accredited graduate program in Library and Information studies. Only 69 awards were made nationally this year. In other scholarship news, a SIRLS student was the single recipient of the American Chemical Society’s Lucille Wert Scholarship awarded to one student each year who has an undergraduate degree with a major in Chemistry, and who has been accepted into a graduate program in Library, Information or Computer Science.
