Special Library Association (SLA) Student Group

Greetings from the Library Student Organization!

We have had a busy and challenging 2003 so far! With an almost completely new crop of officers this semester, we've been working hard to best meet the needs of SIRLS students.

Programs: This semester we hosted several professional development workshops for our students including one on résumé writing and two on Web development. We had a great turn-out for these events, and hope to continue to make use of the vast experience of local SIRLS alumni and other local librarians and information professionals.

Social Activities: LSO has also worked to increase the participation of LSO students by holding social functions. The Spring semester's social events included happy hours, dinners, and a karaoke night. These gatherings are a great way for students who take many online classes to see each other face-to-face!

Our Spring 2003 graduates will be celebrating their achievements in the SIRLS courtyard where LSO (in conjuction with SIRLS) has planned a reception with light hors d'oeuvres, music, and a presentation of the graduates by Director Brooke Sheldon. We're expecting a great turn-out as we mark this important event in the lives of graduating students.

Website: We ended our semester with LSO's first fully online election including online nominations, candidate statements, and an online ballot. New also to the LSO website this semester are online photo albums from recent LSO events. Check them out at http://www.sir.arizona.edu/lso/photos.htm .

Fundraising: In addition to selling t-shirts, LSO organized an Asian Dinner fundraiser which included a raffle. We raised $400.00 from that dinner to offset the cost of our graduation reception.

Our next fundraiser is perfect for Tucson-based alumni a) who don't like to cook and/or b) want to help out LSO in a fun and tasty way! All you have to do is bring one of our flyers to the Sweet Tomatoes on E. Broadway between 5-8pm on Wednesday, May 21 and a percentage of the cost of your meals goes right back to LSO! Pick up a flyer from a current LSO officer, from the SIRLS office, or check out the LSO website, where it will be posted soon!

All the best,

A message from the SLA Student Group

"For those of you who don't know what the SLA Student Group does, we actively
promote the value of special libraries, with the objective of fostering an
interest among students in special librarianship. Our goal is to create a
better understanding of special libraries, encourage students to not limit
themselves to traditional roles, and to ensure that students know the value of
the SLA in achieving and continuing their professional goals. We achieve these
goals by organizing tours of special libraries, holding an internship fair
every spring, and hosting a non-traditional speaker series.

Some examples of special libraries in the Tucson area include: the Center for
Creative Photography Library, the Biosphere 2 Center Library, the library at
Raytheon, and the Arizona Daily Star Library.
