SIRLS students are invited to attend the National Historical Foundation's 2008 Goldwater Lecture in cooperation with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. This year's lecture features political commentator Aaron Brown, radio and television journalist for CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS, presenting The Press and Politics in the 2008 Campaign. The lecture will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2008 in the Virginia Piper Auditorium, College of Medicine, 600 E Van Buren, Phoenix, AZ. A reception starts at 5:15 followed by the lecture from 6 - 7 pm. Seats are limited. RSVP is required; call the Historical Foundation at 480-965-3283. |

January 31, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the Ingenta Research Award given annually by the Library Research Round Table of the American Library Association to support research projects about acquisition, use, and preservation of digital information. Applications are welcome from practicing librarians, faculty and students at schools of library and information science, and independent scholars. The grant consists of up to $6,000 for research and up to $1,000 for travel to a national or international conference to present the results of the research. February 1, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the 2008 Lucille M. Wert Scholarship designed to help persons with an interest in the fields of Chemistry and Information to pursue graduate study in Library, Information, or Computer Science, the Scholarship consists of a $1,500 honorarium. This scholarship is given yearly by the Division of Chemical Information of the American Chemical Society. The applicant must have a bachelor's degree with a major in Chemistry or related disciplines. February 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for a USA Funds individual scholarships of $1,500, which can be renewed annually up to a total award of $6,000. To qualify, graduate students must be enrolled full-time, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and be able to demonstrate financial need. Applications will be accepted online beginning December 15, 2007. Up to 50% of the scholarships will be targeted to applicants who are members of an ethnic-minority group (Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian, Black/African-American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander) or have a documented physical disability. http://www.usafunds.org/planning/access_to_education_scholarship/index.html
March 1, 2008 is the deadline for a number of ALA scholarship opportunities. The American Library Association (ALA) is committed to promoting and advancing the librarian profession. To demonstrate this commitment, the ALA and its units provide more than $300,000 annually for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited unit. A single application form can be used to apply for multiple scholarships. See http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=scholarships for details. March 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for one of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) 2008 CALA Scholarships. Awards range from $200 to $1000. These scholarships are open to full-time students of Chinese heritage who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited master's or doctoral program of library and information science at an institution of higher education in North America. May 8, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the University of Southern Mississippi British Studies Program LIS 580/587, British Libraries and Information Centers, in
summer 2008. Spend four weeks at Kings College in London and at the
University of Edinburgh and earn 6 hours of graduate LIS credit.
Students will experience on-site lectures by British librarians,
archivists, and curators and have time to research approved topics on
June 15, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the student papers issue of DttP (Documents to the People), which is designed to showcase the talents and
interests of current library school students. Papers should focus on
substantive issues in government information at all levels of government
(local, state, federal, international) librarianship. Style guidelines are available. DttP is a professional journal. Class papers which do not
conform to editorial guidelines should be reformatted to receive
consideration.

Most brown bag research lectures, some student events and SIRLS events such as graduation are presented in audio or video format. This year's podcasts are set up to stream, so you can listen or watch directly in your browser without having to wait for a lengthy download. Or, download to your mp3 player for later replay. Want to make your own podcast or video blog? SIRLS faculty and students may check out audio and video recording equipment for classes, projects or events. We have a digital audio recorder, a digital camera with some video capability, and a digital video camera with tripod. UA News has produced a video podcast on Secial Collections at the UA Libraries. Check it out! Express Retrieval Service - The UA Library’s new Express Retrieval service has started! The library will now retrieve items off the library shelves and place them directly on the hold shelf for you to come and pick up. This service is only available to UA faculty, staff and students who have a valid CatCard and a library account in good standing. Books and videos/DVDs can be retrieved from the Main, Science, Fine Arts, and Center for Creative Photography Libraries.
