Online Courses at SIRLS

In order to make your educational experience as pleasant as possible, we have established some links to useful information provided by both The School of Information Resources & Library Science and The University of Arizona.

Please read this information carefully. If you have questions, please e-mail sirls@email.arizona.edu.

The link to technical and computer requirements will give you the information you need regarding technology information for the program. The computing resources page will help you find your way through electronic resources, campus resources and provide some of the necessary tools for assisting you with your program. The guide includes links to resources useful for creating Web sites such as HTML authoring guides, software packages, and graphic tools.

School Communication Information

OFFICIAL NOTICES: Admitted students are automatically subscribed to the administrative School list, IRLSADMIN. This is a one-way list (you cannot reply to the postings). It is the primary means of communication about the School’s academic information.

CLASS LISTSERVS: Students MUST be subscribed to the specific class list for each class for which they are registered. These lists are used for notices, assistance, housekeeping and maintenance of the course.

WEBCT: Discussion for class will take place on WebCT. All students in the program will be given access to WebCT upon admission to the program. See also the WebCT Tutorial from the LSO Student Handbook

SCHOOL-RELATED DISCUSSION: There is also another listserv, called UA-LSO, for school-related discussion items. It is an un-moderated list run by the Library Student Organization. Non-degree students may subscribe themselves to this list.

How to Subscribe to Listservs

New subscribers need to address or send mail to the master computer which controls all lists at The University of Arizona. It is called "listserv." Students may subscribe to all lists at one time, using separate lines for each request or command. Follow these instructions:

Send an e-mail message to:
listserv@listserv.arizona.edu

Type nothing in the subject line, go to the message text or body of the e-mail, and type the information for the listserv to which you wish to subscribe:

subscribe ua-lso Yourfirstname Yourlastname
subscribe IRLS520 Yourfirstname Yourlastname

For example:
subscribe ua-lso Rupert Giles

NOTE: The class listservs will NOT be set up until a week before classes begin.

Send the message, type nothing else. Do NOT attach a signature file. Depending on how busy the listserv computer is, you will receive a message for each list within a few minutes to a few hours. SAVE this important information for later. These are instructions you will need for future commands, like UNSUBSCRIBING to the various lists. If you are not registered for a class, you do not need to join the list for that class.
