UA-LSO Electronic Mailing List Information, Guidelines and Policy
Brief Technical Instructions
To join the list, send an email message to: listserv@listserv.arizona.edu with an empty subject line, and with the following line appended by your name as the body of the email:
Because the list engine registers your email address as a subscriber instead of your name, only the email account you registered will be allowed to receive postings or to post messages. You may register all of your email addresses. We discourage students from subscribing with a Hotmail email address as this has caused problems in the past.
Currently there is no archived version of UA-LSO available to browse.
Tip: To see how many people are subscribed to the list, send the message rev ua-lso to listserv@listserv.arizona.edu.
To unsubscribe from the list, send an email message to: listserv@listserv.arizona.edu with an empty subject line, and with the following line appended by your name as the body of the email:

Guidelines and Policy
The purpose of the UA-LSO list is to provide a forum for the open discussion and announcement of matters of interest (both intellectual and practical) to the students enrolled at the University of Arizona, School of Information Resources and Library Science (SIRLS).
Participation in the UA-LSO electronic mailing list is generally governed by University of Arizona guidelines and policies regulating electronic communication. See the following links for detailed information.
University of
Arizona Electronic Mail Policy
(http://w3.arizona.edu/~records/efinal.htm)
CCIT Computer
and Network Usage Policy
(http://www.u.arizona.edu/~cuac/policyua.htm)
The following is a list of advice and policy that may or may not already appear in the U of A guidelines linked above.
- Participation in the UA-LSO list is voluntary. The list is an
open forum for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and all others
who have an interest in the School of Information Resources and
Library Science (SIRLS) at the University of Arizona.
- The UA-LSO list is sponsored by the local ALA Student Chapter,
the Library Student Organization (LSO). The LSO board is responsible
for upholding compliance with University of Arizona electronic
communication guidelines as well as with basic rules of internet
etiquette.
- All healthy discussions and postings related to issues that
concern SIRLS and librarianship in general are welcome. Seek to
build the UA-LSO community by sharing expert knowledge and other
relevant information.
- The UA-LSO list is unmoderated. This means that all messages
sent by subscribers will be posted automatically and will be received
by all. Because of this, every subscriber is asked to exercise
proper judgement prior to posting anything to the list.
- Personal insults and flaming are not welcome. While such messages
are not pre-screened, the sender should expect the general displeasure
of all list members, as well as approriate action from the LSO
board that could result in the loss of UA-LSO list privileges.
While ideological disagreements are appropriate, personal attacks
are not.
- Consider whether UA-LSO is the approriate medium for your particular
message. Keep in mind that your post to UA-LSO is a message every
subscriber will get. Therefore, refrain from sending short "Thank
you," "Congratulations," or "Me too" notes to the whole list.
Send them only to the individuals. Do not use the UA-LSO list
to pass on chain letters of any sort of any urgency, or "spam"
the list with unsolicited advertising or propaganda. While materials
such as commercial advertising for personal gain are illegal,
it is appropriate to seek friendly advice. (E.g. "Can you recommend
me a place to live during summer session?") The sender is expected
to make this judgement before posting.
- Do not expect confidentiality. UA-LSO messages may and will
be forwarded to other non-subscribers who may be interested.
- When answering to a posting, make sure the answer will reach
the intended party only and not the whole UA-LSO list, unless
your intended party is the whole list. This may be the most important
advice you want to take, as it can save you from embarrassment.
Even more important than this, however, is: Be forgiving of other
people's mistakes!
- Questions concerning UA-LSO must be addressed to LSO, and not to SIRLS staff.
