LSO Minutes: 2000
President's Message, May 2000
Hi everyone! This is Lisa Bunker here, your new LSO President for
the summer and fall semesters. I have wanted to write and share some
ideas that the LSO Board and I have about what we hope to accomplish
during our months of service.
But first, let me introduce myself to people who don't know me yet. I am starting my third semester (of five, I think) at SIRLS and was the LSO Social Activities Coordinator last fall; during Spring Semester I had the job of Secretary. [personal information deleted here] I have worked in border libraries, well-funded suburban libraries, bookstores, and anything else that seemed interesting at the time. The hitch was that all of these jobs paid so poorly that even librarian's pay seemed enticing! I am enjoying my time at SIRLS (more than I thought I would -- I used to grumble over why I actually needed this degree) and think that these coming semesters will be an exciting time to be a student at the school.
Any LSO is charged with facilitating student/faculty and student/ALA relationships. This is why we have members that attend the faculty meetings (and post the minutes), or who are liaisons to the faculty and director search committees. These students are full voting members at these meetings and play an important role in communicating student concerns to the school leadership.
Our other "job" is just as important: we are students helping fellow students. Toward this goal, we raise money to pay for social activities and programming or for things like awards or the equipment needed to put on the graduation dinner.
We try to put together social activities and other programming that folks will be interested in, and as of last semester, we are the "owners" of the student listserv "UA-LSO." LSO board members work hard to make the "JOBOPS" listserv the great career resource that it is, and to keep our website <http://www.sir.arizona.edu/lso/> informative and up-to-date.
I believe that an effective LSO Board listens and communicates well. Talk to us. We will listen. Here is your current LSO Board: · President: that would be me; · VP/Treasurer: Tracy Cook; · Secretary and Friends Committee Chair (newsletter): Ingrid Trebiski; · Social Activities Coordinators: Ginger Cullen and Chris Novak; · Programming: Alicia Gonzalez; · Fundraising: Kathy Lindemann; · Webmaster: John Guilonard; · Student/Faculty Liaison Rob Lindley; · Jobs Coordinator: Alba Nora Fernandez (temporary). Alba is continuing to keep the job announcements posted -- at least until she leaves next month (anyone interested?). All of our email addresses are posted on the LSO website at <http://www.sir.arizona.edu/lso/officers.html> in case you want to write us.
Here are some of the ideas we are talking about:
1) We are working on ways to take advantage of the newly upgraded
computer lab, such as regularly scheduled times for informal computer
help as well as formal classes on specific subjects taught by the
Library's crack teaching teams. Tell us what classes or help you would
like to have, and we'll work on it. This project is still in the formative
stage.
2) We are working with the front office and the SLA to repaint the
LSO/SLA "Lounge" (er, hallway) something more inviting. I will be
renovating the bulletin boards too, but -- does anyone read them?
Are we so electronic now that they're not necessary?
3) Charley Seavey has told me that the LSO, SLA and student body can
have the old conference room next to the computer lab for a lounge
for at least this summer. I am in the process of contacting UA stores
for surplus furniture like a sofa, etc., and we will be approaching
the local museums and libraries for more interesting posters to put
up. This new lounge will be accessible 'round the clock along with
the computer lab now that a keypad lock on the side door.
4) We hope that you will be able to make it to the summer and fall's
social events! If you haven't met many of your fellow students I can
tell you that we are an interesting lot, and good company. Coming
up soon, there is the SIRLS-sponsored "Make your own taco party" on
June 1st, and the annual summer LSO/SLA pizza party (date to be announced).
We will be polling students at the taco party to find out what else
there is interest in. Have some good ideas? Contact Ginger at cullen@u.arizona.edu
or Chris at snowball@aztec.asu.edu.
5) Other ideas we haven't fleshed out yet: New-student mentoring,
tours of the campus and SIRLS during orientation, and more fundraising.
We would also like to provide another chance for students to meet
Dr. Sheldon sometime this summer or fall (although she will be teaching
in South America for most of the summer). Are there ways we can help
distance students more?
Other plugs I want to make:
Join the UA-LSO listserv, the only school listserv that you can post
to! Information on subscribing is on the website <http://www.sir.arizona.edu/lso/ualso.html>.
If more students sign on, maybe we can stop double posting so much!
If you are only on IRLSADMIN, you are missing out on some good information/discussions.
Yes, there are some rules, but they are standard for un-moderated
listservs; the University mandated others, since it resides on their
computers. Currently, there are about 90 people (mostly students and
former students) who subscribe to this list.
Join the LSO! It only costs $3.00 a semester (Fall, Spring, Summer), or $9.00 a year. If you haven't renewed membership, please consider renewing. Better yet, get involved -- come to the monthly (we announce them) general board meetings and/or run for office. The next general LSO meeting is on June 5th at 5:30pm in the LSO/SLA Lounge (former conference room). Another good reason to join: I can't think why; - but employers seem to be impressed with involvement in student organizations such as this. Applications are available on the website <http://www.sir.arizona.edu/lso/join.html> or in the LSO/SLA hallway.
I want to express my thanks to previous LSO Boards. You have made it easy for this board to try some new ideas. Because past fundraising (our cool T-shirts!) has been so successful, we have the resources to really have some fun. And finally, we want you to know that we are here for all of you: local and distance, full-time and part time, new and continuing. If you have ideas/concerns/suggestions, please let me, or another board member, know. We can't do it without you! --Lisa

Present: Lisa Bunker, Tracy Cook, Ginger Cullen, Kathy Lindemann,
Robert Lindley, Chris Novak, Ingrid Trebisky.
Meeting was convened at 5:30 PM.
JOB VACANCIES: We are currently in need of a jobs coordinator and also a webmaster. The opening for the webmaster will be posted on the listserv.
LOUNGE RENOVATION: Lisa displayed posters brought from home depicting State Museum exhibits and Van Gogh art posters. We also looked at paint swatches trying to determine a color for the lounge. A straw vote was taken on a rose versus yellow color. The rose was preferred by one vote. We have a choice to either supply our own paint and $ for painter, or go along with the office color pick and piggyback on their work order.
COMPUTER SKILLS CLASSES: Mary Feeney will be teaching a webpage class June 16 at 3pm. As of 6/5 seven are signed up with a maximum of 24. Further classes provided by LSO will be on hold until we get a new webmaster.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: Ginger discussed the results of her survey on summer student interests. There were 22 surveys returned and of those 18 would be attending SSI and 13 SSII. A number were interested in the Desert Museum, Zoo, Flandrau, hiking and camping, exploring southern AZ., ethnic dining, and happy hour. The need for carpooling to off-campus sites was discussed. The next activity planned is an ice-cream sundae social at SIRLS. Ginger and Chris will be organizing this.
FUNDRAISING: New colors for the T-shirts were chosen. They will be black, white grey (our current colors), red and turquoise. Kathy will be taking orders on the listserv to get an idea of how many to get. We also will be selling them at REFORMA National Convention in August. We will get a table for $50. Tracy Cook will be organizing this for Aug 3-6. A further incentive for T-shirt sales and LSO membership involved a $1 off a T-shirt when joining LSO. The idea of getting pins for SIRLS graduates was also discussed.
PROGRAMMING: Some students expressed in the survey an interest in touring other libraries in the area. Tracy Cook will be looking into a tour at TPPL.

Ingrid Trebisky, reporting
LSO Executive Board minutes, 22 Sept. 2000 at SIRLS
Present: Lisa Bunker, Tracy Cook, Ginger Cullen, Chris Novak, Gwen
Alexander, and Lori Critz.
1) Gwen reported that the FACULTY SEARCH COMMITTEE will meet in early October to start reviewing applicants.
2) FACULTY MEETING minutes (provided by Rob Lindley)
for 8/30 and 9/13 and were read. Here are the highlights:
---Brian Atkinson (SBS) is looking into getting some new PCs in the
computer lab.
---The room off of the computer lab (former conference room #2 and
this summer's "student lounge") will be converted to a multi-purpose
room so that more classes may use it. Among other things, it will
get a new AC unit. ---Winter session classes have been posted online
and on the bulletin boards.
---A Fullbright Scholar from China, Dr. Ying Ye will be here later
this month, doing work through SIRLS.
---Our new director, Dr. Brooke Sheldon will be here the week of October
16-21; time for students to visit with her will be scheduled.
---Betty Marcoux's new title is Director of Certification and Interdisciplinary
Programs.
---The Faculty needs a list of software that students want on the
machines in the computer lab. [Rob Lindley has posted to both lists
asking for input].
3) TREASURER'S REPORT: Tracy told us that we have roughly $200.00 in the bank. The total cost of the Pizza Party (costs were split 50-50 between the LSO and the SLA) was about 100.00.
4) Have you wished you could talk to someone working in Libraryland about your career? AzLA MENTORING PROGRAM: Lori Critz, UA Science Librarian, spoke to us about how she is working to regenerate interest in AzLA's Mentoring Program. Currently, there are 2 such programs: one through SIRLS' alumni and one through AzLA. Lori is working up new publicity for AzLA's initiative and will be making a presentation to SIRLS students about opportunities in early October. AzLA hopes to recruit librarian-mentors for both local and distance students who elect to be a part of this great program (details to come later). They will try to match mentors to the student's interests and career goals.
5) GRADUATION DINNER: So far there have been 5 responses to my query about date preferences for the Graduation Dinner. 3 could come on Thursday, 1 could ONLY attend Friday and the fifth person could not make it either night. I am in the uncomfortable position of making a decision based upon very little input. *Please contact me if you are an August or December 2000 graduate!* Chris reported that she has spoken to La Cocina about both dates -- at this point they are not booked for either night. One surprise was that their prices have gone up considerably ($5.00 per person over last year), so we are also looking into other venues. Know a restaurant with a festive or elegant atmosphere, good food and room for 30-50 people? Let me know at LWBAZ@mindspring.com We will continue to try to keep prices under $25.00 per person.
6) SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: The next event is tonight's movie screening of "Party Girl" at 6:30pm. Ice Cream sundaes will be served! We have also planned the next happy hour to be at Zachary's Pizza, and a fall color hike on Mt. Lemmon, details to be announced.
That's it! --Lisa, reporting for Ingrid who is in Greece!

Teaching in the computer lab: The possibility was discussed of having some computer classes in the computer lab by some of the more computer literate students for LIS students. Possibly one of the Gates interns could pass on some training information?

Ingrid Trebisky, reporting
The meeting convened at SIRLS at 5:50 PM.
Present were Lisa Bunker, Rob Lindley, Gwen Alexander, and Ginger Cullen.
Ginger is reporting for Ingrid Trebisky, who was unavoidably detained.
Lisa reported that the elections for LSO officers for the spring semester and for outstanding faculty member are progressing well! Gwen asked for clarification of how eligibility for the outstanding faculty award is determined. Lisa explained that anyone who taught a SIRLS class during any of the summer sessions or the fall semester is eligible. Students may vote for whomever they wish. As soon as the elections are completed, we will have the plaque engraved in time to present it to our outstanding faculty member at the graduation dinner. Voting will continue through Friday, and Lisa encouraged anyone who has not yet voted to be sure to do so. So far, votes are pretty evenly spread-out among our faculty members. Your vote may make the difference!
Lisa mentioned that it looks as though we'll have another strong board for spring semester. This makes it easier on everyone, as it's really a team effort and everyone is always willing to step in to help someone else. However, she noted that we still do not have anyone on the ballot for Fundraising Coordinator. This is an important position, although not extremely difficult or time consuming, as everyone pitches in and helps out. Anyone who thinks they might be interested should contact Lisa, and a special election will be held. Lisa said that Sam Huang, with UA Library fundraising, has excellent ideas for raising money, and is willing to help with ideas. Sale of the Folkmanis hand and finger puppets is another fund-raising option mentioned by Lisa. She told us that she has heard that Folkmanis will sell the puppets wholesale to non-profit organizations. Ginger mentioned that the Carl's Jr. Restaurants and Sweet Tomatoes also have fund-raising programs.
Gwen suggest that LSO dues be raised to $5 a semester. This is something that the new board may want to consider.
Lisa offered her home for a "welcoming" party for new board members. A tentative date was set for Tuesday, December 19. Ginger suggested that "old" board members could provide the food. Lisa said that she could prepare Italian deli goods, which are a Christmas eve tradition in her home begun by her grandmother. Ginger offered to bring an antipasto (meatless), Gwen said that she could bring a dessert, and Rob offered to bring cider.
Ginger reported that thus far 41 people have RSVP'd in the affirmative for our graduation dinner. In addition to four of our graduates, the attendees will include Jane Kolbe from ASLAPR, SBS Dean Holly Smith, Carla and Richard Stoffle, J.A. Jance and her husband, and all of the fulltime SIRLS faculty.
Gwen reported that the candidate search for new SIRLS faculty is going well. She said that four wonderful candidates have presented so far, with two yet to go. Gwen added that SIRLS hopes to hire at least two (possibly three) candidates from this selection. These new faculty members would begin teaching in the fall of 2001.
The meeting adjourned at 6:45.
The next scheduled meeting will be the pot luck at Lisa's to welcome our new board members, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday evening, December 19. We could call it "Welcome Aboard!"
Notes respecfully submitted by Ginger Cullen, filling
in for Ingrid Trebisky.

The meeting convened at 7:45 in the home of Lisa Bunker
In attendance: Lisa Bunker, Ginger Cullen, Shelly Deumm, Gwen Alexander,
Jennifer Landwehr, Rob and Jean Lindley, Ingrid Trebisky and Abbie
Zeltzer.
Lisa expressed her appreciation of working with all former LSO Board members and welcomed new board members.
Discussion ensued as to an appropriate manner of complaint to El Parador Restaurant for not fulfilling their graduation dinner contract.
New fund raiser, Shelly, suggested contacting alumni in Phoenix as a means to raise funds for the organization. Suggestions of times and dates for future meetings took place, as well as the possibility of holding executive and public meetings consecutively.
Ingrid suggested inviting Brooke Sheldon to the first general meeting.
Methods for reaching and including distance students in the organization were discussed. Shelly suggested using WebCT as a venue.
Board members discussed ways to increase paying membership: suggestions included membership cards, gift certificate raffles to new members joining the first month of the semester. Gwen made a motion to raffle off a $20.00 gift certificate from amazon.com or other .com. The motion passed unanimously. Gwen suggested raising membership dues from $3.00 to $5.00 a semester, other ideas included $10.00 for a 12 month membership versus a $10.00 calendar year fee. Lisa made a motion to change membership fee from $3.00 a semester to $10.00 annual fee. The motion passed unanimously. All agreed with Lisa's suggestion of a continual membership drive and Gwen suggested sending electronic messages to inform members when membership fees are due.
Brief discussion on new student welcoming party and other social activities ensued. No decisions were made, as the new LSO Social Coordinator was not present at the meeting.
Lisa mentioned working on the student handbook for spring.
The next meeting is scheduled for 5:30pm, Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at SIRLS. Meeting adjourned at 8:45pm. Submitted by Abbie Zeltzer, LSO Secretary
