LSO Minutes 1997
Date: Mon, 17 Feb 1997
Subject: LSO Minutes 2/17/97
The LSO met at Noon today, February 17, 1997. In the absence of Secretary Martha Schaffer, Lisa Stage took notes.
Christa Gush, formerly known as Activities Coordinator will henceforth be officially known as Mischief Coordinator. The highly popular Bowling Night will be repeated, with a challenge issued this time to the University librarians. Details will be posted. Additional mischief being planned: a group outing to see "The Empire Strikes Back," a barbecue and picnic in the park with traditional picnic activities, miniature golfing, and a day hike. The consensus seems to be that Sunday is the best day to hold activities to accommodate working students (and faculty).
With the school name change, we are hoping the school will get a new logo. This semester's T shirts, in the meantime, will feature a library-related quote (we see so many good ones in people's dot sigs) and our organization name.
We discussed changing the name of the LSO to reflect the School name change, but no one present felt the need to do so.
The LSO would like to solicit opinions from distance students on how they can be more involved in the School. We have discussed creating a Distance Student Representative position for the LSO board to be held by a distance student, either through e-mail contact, or a student from Phoenix or other nearby area who could travel to meetings. We are also considering a buddy program to pair distance and local students. Distance students, please give us your feelings on implementing either or both of these programs.
As you have seen on the listserv, Cheryl Jackson has been getting the Career Day program together. She is also using responses to people's cataloguing program requests to plan that program. Another program some people are interested in is hearing human resources people in local libraries describe exactly what they're looking for and what they want to see in resumes and interviews.
Students are invited to an informal meeting on March 10 at Noon in the LSO conference room.

Subject: LSO Minutes 3/3/97
At the LSO meeting of 3/3/97, Lisa Stage took minutes, as Secretary Martha Schaffer could not be there.
- Sue Fitzner is working on making the databases the School has access to (DIALOG, LEXUS/NEXUS) available to students for research and/or practice. She needs a student to work with her on this. Skills in working with these databases are in high demand -- get great experience with these databases for free!
- LSO officers will write about recent school news for the alumni newsletter for Kathy Wilka. Anyone who wants to contribute is welcome to.
- Robin and Lisa are working on getting the LSO T-shirts designed and printed. Should be available soon!
- Many thanks to Ken for putting the LSO website together. Looks great! Please send kudos or corrections to kenneths@dakotacom.net.
- The student directories are here -- thanks Donna! They will be in the LSO office. You're on the honor system to pay your $3 LSO membership (and sign the list, so we know you joined) before taking a directory. Distance students coordinate with Donna at harringd@u.arizona.edu, if you haven't already. Because of printing costs, the LSO is considering doing an electronic version next semester.
- Our Mischief Coordinator is on a roll with Empire Strikes Back and baseball! Christa's also working on coordinating a picnic and barbecue with SLA.
- Many students were concerned about the interviewer from Las Vegas who canceled due to lack of interest. For future interviewers, let's communicate with Kathy about the appropriateness of doing informational interviews, and let her know right away whether you might be interested, since last minute RSVPs may be too late.
- Cheryl has the Career Day set for Wednesday, March 26, 3:30 to 5:30. Come meet librarians in all different fields and find out the real scoop! The Cataloging Workshop has hit some delays -- Cheryl's working through them. And she is working on an Interviewing Workshop with librarians in human resources letting us know what they're looking for and what types of questions they ask.
Lisa presented the highlights of the 3/3 Faculty Meeting:
- The faculty and staff love the bright new look in the conference room. Thanks, Christa, for putting together the redecorating!
- Beginning in Fall 1997, registration for distance courses will be through RSVP. The good news is that registration will be more streamlined and less expensive for Arizona students. The bad news is, out-of-state students will be paying full out-of-state tuition. Currently, federal and state financial aid do not recognize distance education. The Department of Education is working on it, though, and the government hopes to have federal financial aid for distance students in a year or so. Please talk to the School if you have any questions on how this will affect you.
- Kathy noticed that many students are unclear about what constitutes an internship. She and the faculty will work on putting examples of good internship proposals on the Web page.
- Do you know of anyone who would be a good candidate for the SIRLS? Encourage people you know to apply; there will be some more admissions slots available.
- The faculty are working on putting together the Fall schedule. The advance word is that Prof. Seavey's Government Documents class will be offered over the Web.
- Some students who've talked to the Graduate College have gotten an unclear picture of the Ph.D. requirements. A Ph.D. requires 48 major units in Library Science, preferably with most of those units taken in the SIRLS, and 12 of those 48 in research methods. It also requires a minor, which is usually about 12 units, but it depends upon the minor department. And it requires 18 units of dissertation. Students with a Masters not from the U of A will need to talk to the School about what will transfer. Any questions, talk to your faculty advisor.

The first summer meeting of the Library Student Organization was held today. The following is a brief summary:
The LSO summer meeting schedule will be every Monday at 1 p.m. in the library school conference room. Meetings are open; all are welcome.
Several social events have already been planned. The
first will be this Friday at 5 p.m. at the library school to welcome
summer students. Other events coming up will include an outing on
the evening of Wednesday, June
18th and a trip to Phoenix. Details will follow from Cindy Aliff,
Mischief Coordinator.
LSO Offices: There are a number of LSO positions for
Fall 97 still open at this time, including President, Program Coordinator
and Listserv Manager. Interested parties may contact current president
Claudine Perrault at:
perrault@u.arizona.edu A complete list of available positions will
be posted at a later time.
Miscellaneous Items: The current LSO Constitution requires that voting take place by means of a ballot box. A motion was made to change the wording in the Constitution to mention electronic voting instead. Another motion was made to change the office "T-shirt Coordinator" to "Fundraiser".
Date: Wed, 25 Jun 1997
Subject: LSO Minutes 6/23/97
Two issues were resolved from a previous LSO meeting: The "T-shirt Coordinator" is now the Fundraiser, and the LSO Constitution now acknowledges electronic voting.
Several LSO offices for the fall are still vacant; nominations are welcome and may be addressed to LSO president Claudine Perrault.
A new office--Distance Delegate--was created to focus on the issues and concerns of distance students. The LSO welcomes Jason Brown of Phoenix as the new Distance Delegate.
Mary Feeney and Claudine Perrault will put together
a new web page that will support the function of the Distance Delegate
position. Among other things, it will offer helpful information for
distance students who come
to Tucson for the summer.
The next meeting of the LSO will be at 1:00 p.m. July 14 in the conference room.
